A day of music, community and purpose at St John’s

On Saturday, 25 April, St John’s Church in Peterborough became a place not only of music but of generous giving and shared purpose, as it hosted an inspiring 12-hour music-athon. From morning through to evening, the church was filled with uplifting sound, fellowship, and a spirit of charity, as performers and listeners gathered to give what they could; through music, time, and donations.

The day brought together a rich and varied programme of singers and musicians, each offering their unique gifts in service of a common cause. From the opening notes to the final applause, the church rang with an eclectic blend of musical styles, with congregation members, friends, and wider supporters all taking part. Solo vocalists, choirs, instrumentalists, and ensembles contributed to a vibrant tapestry of sound that reflected both the diversity of the community and its unity in faith.

Highlights included the Choir of St John’s, now a flourishing group of around 30 adults and children aged seven and above, who shared music spanning the Church year and a powerful and moving organ recital from Director of Music, Jeremy Jepson, bringing the marathon to a fitting and uplifting close.

The event was organised in response to very real needs: essential repairs to the beloved Harrison organ, estimated at nearly £8,000, and the provision of additional robes to support the growing choir.

Throughout the day, a deep sense of generosity, hospitality, and shared care was evident. Performers gave their time freely, dedicated volunteers ensured the event ran smoothly, warmly welcomed visitors and ran an all-day café, offering a wonderful selection of homemade cakes and refreshments. Those who attended gave generously through donations and encouragement, demonstrating how the church continues to be a place where people come together to support one another.

Reverend Michelle Dalliston, Vicar of Peterborough, reflected on the day, saying:

“The whole event was simply stunning! To have the church filled with such a variety of music for the whole day and evening was glorious and we are incredibly grateful to all those musicians and supporters who took part. We want to bring the joy of music to everyone and to make both performing and engaging with music of all kinds accessible and fun. We are both aiming to preserve our heritage of music along with our fine organ, as well as find new ways to draw people into the joy of music and the wonder of the space in this beautiful medieval church. In the process of course, people may be drawn to want to know more about God or to deepen their faith and discipleship.”

As the final notes faded and the doors closed after 12 hours, there was a strong sense that something truly meaningful had taken place. The music-athon was more than a concert, it was a celebration of community spirit, a testament to the power of music, and an important step towards sustaining a cherished musical tradition at St John’s Church.

Donations and sponsorship are still being received, but early indications suggest the total will exceed £2,000, making a significant contribution towards the organ repairs and supporting the continuing ministry of music within the church.

With heartfelt thanks to everyone who performed, volunteered, supported, and attended, there is a shared hope that the spirit of this day will continue to bear fruit ensuring that St John’s remains a place where music and and community flourish together for many years to come.
