Greetham’s bells ring again: A village united in faith, memory and hope

For many years, the bells of St Mary’s Church, Greetham, stood silent. Before 2022 they were rarely rung, their familiar sound slowly fading from village life. But in 2023, hope was rekindled when a new team of bell ringers came together, eager to restore a much-loved tradition.

It wasn’t long before enthusiasm met reality. After only a few practices, broken stays revealed a deeper problem. Inspection showed the bells were in poor condition, with significant rust and corrosion in the bell frame. Expert advice from three bell-hanging firms confirmed what no one wanted to hear: the bells would need to come down entirely if they were to be made safe and ring again.

So began a remarkable journey of faith, generosity and community spirit.

Fundraising started in January 2024 with a village ceilidh. At that point, the £50,000 needed for the work felt daunting. Yet throughout 2024, the village pressed on, applying for grants, hosting events, and giving generously. Within just ten months, the target was reached, allowing plans to move forward to refurbish the bells and replace the steel frame.

At the December Carol Service, the bells rang out one last time before the work began. In January 2025, the bell hangers arrived, and the bells were displayed in church before travelling to Loughborough for restoration. More than a hundred people came to see them before they left, and again when they returned, an extraordinary sign of how deeply they are cherished.

The project was not without challenges. Testing revealed the treble bell was out of tune, requiring the entire set to be retuned. Woodworm and rot were also discovered in the clock chamber and belfry floors. Thankfully, careful planning and a contingency fund meant these unexpected issues could be addressed without halting progress.

After eight weeks of careful installation, the bells were ready. On 12 September, the village gathered to welcome them home, hearing them ring once more in their renewed glory. Two days later, the church was full for a joyful service of rededication, led by Bishop Debbie.

Throughout the project, the community stayed closely connected. Regular updates on the village Facebook page built anticipation and encouragement, while local media helped share the story more widely. Today, the bell ringers have returned to Friday practices and ring regularly for Sunday services, with new recruits warmly welcomed.

These bells are more than instruments. They are Greetham’s war memorial. Originally recast and rehung in 1923, they honour those who gave their lives in war. At the village celebration, one resident shared The Story of the Bells, reminding everyone that although those who died never heard them ring, we remember them every time we do. It was a poignant and powerful moment.

The church offers heartfelt thanks to all who supported the project—individual donors, volunteers, and grant-giving trusts whose generosity made this possible. Together, they have preserved a tradition, strengthened a community, and ensured that the bells of Greetham will continue to ring out in remembrance, worship and hope for generations to come.
