The 32nd All Saints Kettering Rainbow Guides have been working hard over recent weeks to earn their own Eco Award to complement Kettering All Saints Parish Church's Gold Eco Award.
Working with the Girlguiding awards syllabus, an initial survey was conducted to see where Rainbows and their families could reduce their carbon foot print. Following the themes 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle' the Rainbows aged 4 - 6 years began by setting up a library to swap books each week so parents didn't need to purchase new ones. This initiative has proved popular and has encouraged more reading at home or listening to stories being read out loud.
The girls then went on to plant 'disco squash and sunflowers in the church gardens. They were actively involved in watering and caring for the plants, even protecting them from low temperatures overnight. Their efforts paid off as they watched the plants grow week by week, eventually taking them home to continue nurturing them with more space, sunlight and water. Exploring local wildlife was another highlight, with the group investigating insects in a log pile - an activity that sparked both curiosity and excitement.
In addition to outdoor activities, the Rainbows demonstrated an awareness of everyday environmental habits. Leaders noted that many of the girls were already conserving water at home by turning off taps while brushing their teeth - something they then encouraged adults to adopt as well.
To promote energy saving, the group designed and created their own reminder stickers for use at home and in the church hall. Featuring an owl character and named 'Tweak My Beak', the stickers were placed near light switches to encourage people to turn off lights when not in use.
Rainbow Guide leader and churchwarden, Angela Brett praised the children’s enthusiasm and initiative, highlighting how environmental awareness can begin at a young age. “Never underestimate what fun you can have with nature at young ages.”
Upon completing the programme, the girls were awarded their Rainbow Eco Award badges and certificates.
