On Sunday 14 June, more than 50 singers from choirs across the Wellingborough, Higham Ferrers and Kettering Deaneries gathered at the Parish Church of All Hallows, Wellingborough, to celebrate the Royal School of Church Music’s (RSCM) Music Sunday with a Festival Choral Evensong.
Music Sunday provides an opportunity for churches and communities to give thanks for the gift of music in worship, while also recognising the dedication, commitment and talents of everyone involved in church music. As an educational charity, the RSCM works to support and develop music in Christian worship, helping thousands of affiliated churches in the UK and around the world.
The festival choir was directed by All Hallows’ Director of Music, Tony Edwards, with Mark Pescott accompanying on the organ. The service featured a rich selection of music by Batten, Smith, Walmisley, Stanford and Rutter, alongside four uplifting hymns that celebrated the important role of music within the life of the Church.
Before the service, volunteers from All Hallows and All Saints provided a delicious tea, offering singers and visitors a chance to enjoy fellowship together. The warm hospitality set the tone for a joyful evening of worship, which attracted a large congregation from across the deaneries.
The event was a wonderful celebration of music, faith and community. It was so warmly received that organisers hope it will become an annual occasion, continuing to strengthen relationships between local church choirs and supporting the shared ministry of church music across the Diocese.
