SUMMARY:Breaking Not Broken: Ableism and the Church after Constantine
DESCRIPTION:A talk at Peterborough Cathedral by the Revd Canon Timothy Goode\, York Minster. \nHow has the Church’s understanding of disability been shaped by centuries of theology\, culture and assumptions about what it means to be “whole”? And what might change if we began instead with the wounded\, risen body of Christ? \nJoin Timothy Goode\, Canon for Congregational Discipleship and Nurture at York Minster\, for an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of the themes of his acclaimed book\, Breaking Not Broken: Ableism and the Church after Constantine. Drawing on both theological scholarship and his own lived experience of disability\, Tim challenges long-held assumptions about normality\, holiness and belonging within the Christian tradition. \nIn this inspiring talk\, Tim will explore how Christian theology\, worship\, heritage and church buildings can be reimagined through the lens of disability. Moving beyond questions of access alone\, he invites us to consider how the Church might become a community where difference is recognised as a gift and where all people can find belonging. \nTimothy Goode is a theologian\, speaker and author whose work focuses on disability theology\, inclusion and Christian identity. Before joining York Minster\, he served in a range of parish and national Church of England roles\, including as a member of the National Disability Task Group and the Archbishops’ Council. He is also Chair of York Minster’s Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group. \nWhether you are involved in church leadership\, heritage\, education\, ministry or are simply interested in questions of faith\, inclusion and justice\, this promises to be a stimulating evening of reflection and conversation.

SUMMARY:The Beloved Son: A Play
DESCRIPTION:From the creators of the acclaimed Mr Darwin’s Tree and Fire from Heaven comes a remarkable new play The Beloved Son. \nWritten and directed by Murray Watts. Performed by Andrew Harrison at Peterborough Cathedral. \nHenri Nouwen (1932 – 1996) was a Dutch Catholic priest\, psychologist and professor who reached the heights of academic success at Yale and Harvard\, before abandoning everything to join the community of L’Arche Daybreak in Toronto. He became part of a life-sharing movement\, seeking to make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities\, exploring their unique talents and creating a welcoming home of friendship and belonging. \nTo some\, Henri Nouwen put his brilliant career into reverse\, risking the loss of reputation\, to others his life was a prophetic challenge to church and society. The Beloved Son is a moving solo performance exploring hope and longing\, family dynamics\, sexual and emotional crisis and the profound insights of a man who became one of the greatest spiritual writers. \nThis event is being organised and promoted as a fundraiser in support of Peterborough Cathedral. All proceeds from ticket sales and associated event income will contribute directly to the Cathedral’s charitable work\, including the preservation of the historic building\, the continuation of worship and music and the delivery of education and community programmes. By attending\, you are taking part in a dedicated fundraising event that helps ensure the Cathedral remains open\, vibrant and accessible for present and future generations.
