‘God of our beginnings and endings, we celebrate all we have shared with Bishop John and Elizabeth and ask your blessing as they continue their journey.’
On Sunday 28 September we bade a fond farewell to Bishop John at his farewell service in Peterborough Cathedral. The communion service, which included readings and music chosen by Bishop John, was a lovely celebration of his episcopal ministry in this Diocese.
Readings were given by The Revd Haydon Spencely, Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Director of Vocation & Formation, and Canon Precious Luke. The prayers were led by Bishop Debbie, Canon Steve Benoy and Bishop John’s PA, Suzanne Carter.
During his sermon, Bishop John reflected on a life of faith, beginning in the Diocese when his faith first came alive at St Columba’s Church in Corby. He also spoke of his time as a curate and his first missional project called ‘face to face’, with the aim to bring more people face to face with Jesus; an aim which has continued throughout his ministry.
Asked what he wished to be remembered for, Bishop John’s said his answer has always been ‘to be remembered as a man who loved the Lord and wanted others to love him too.’
Following the service thanks were given by James Saunders Watson, The Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, Dr Sarah Furness, The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, The Revd Canon Jane Butler and Caroline Hutchings, County Ecumenical Officer.
We wish him every happiness in his retirement.
