International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated every year on March 8, provides a great opportunity for the Church to pause and recognise the incredible value and contributions of women across all roles within our worshipping communities and also in our wider communities.
In the Bible women play critical roles in God’s story. There’s Hagar who faced rejection and was the first person to name God, Deborah, a fearless leader, loyal Ruth, Mary’s faithful “yes” to carrying Jesus and Lydia, a key leader in the early Church, to name just a few. IWD is a perfect moment to not only honour these stories but also to celebrate the many ways women continue to shape our church communities today.
However, it’s not just about celebration— IWD also call us all to reflection and action. The theme for this year's IWD is #AccelerateAction. According to data from the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 to reach full gender parity - that is roughly five generations from now.
By highlighting the need to Accelerate Action we emphasise the importance of taking decisive steps to achieve gender equality and call for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres.
We should all be asking ourselves are we listening to and amplifying women’s voices in our churches? Are we encouraging women to step into leadership roles? IWD is a chance to think about how we can make the Church a more supportive, empowering place for everyone.
The words of the prophet Micah (Micah 6:8) call us all to live out justice, which means standing against any form of discrimination or inequality. Whether it’s supporting education, leadership opportunities, or speaking out against violence, the Church has an opportunity to show Christ’s love in action.
At its heart for us as Christ's body, his Church, International Women’s Day reminds us of the heart of his gospel —a heart that celebrates everyone, uplifts the marginalized, and brings unity to the body of Christ. It’s a chance to reflect, celebrate, and commit to creating a more loving and just church for all.
Happy International Women's Day!
