On a crisp January evening, over 90 friends and supporters of Peterborough Cathedral gathered for an exclusive event as part of the Katharine of Aragon Festival 2025. Held on 23 January, the evening featured a captivating talk by historian Jackson van Uden, recently named in BBC History Extra's 30 under 30.
The evening began with a drinks reception held beneath the magnificent central tower. As everyone took their seats, the Dean of Peterborough, the Very Revd Chris Dalliston, welcomed guests and highlighted the ongoing Cathedral in Crisis campaign, with an emphasis on the importance of community support.
Jackson van Uden then took the stage, delivering an engaging and insightful talk on "Katharine of Aragon and the Tyranny of Henry VIII." His presentation shed light on the tumultuous relationship between King Henry VIII and his first wife, Queen Katharine of Aragon, who is interred just a stone's throw from where the audience sat. Van Uden's expertise and passion for history captivated the audience, sparking a lively Q&A session.
Following the talk, guests enjoyed a delightful selection of drinks and canapés, providing an opportunity for further discussion. The evening concluded around 9 pm, leaving attendees with a deeper appreciation for the cathedral's rich history and the vital role we all play in preserving its legacy.
This special event not only celebrated the historical significance of Katharine of Aragon but also underscored the importance of support through the Cathedral Keys scheme. This initiative invites members to pledge regular contributions, unlocking access to exclusive events while helping safeguard Peterborough Cathedral for future generations to come. The Cathedral Keys programme has been instrumental in enabling essential repairs, restoration projects, and new developments that enhance the Cathedral’s visitor experience. This funding is crucial, not only for the conservation of the Cathedral’s historic fabric but also for its day-to-day operations, educational programs, and community outreach.
