A service to celebrate Pentecost was broadcast live on the BBC and iPlayer on Sunday 19 May from All Saints Church in Northampton. The service led by Father Oliver Coss, included a sermon preached by Bishop Debbie in her first visit to the town and the first time a female Bishop had preached live on television.
The BBC broadcast live church services on only 3 occasions in the year, to celebrate Christmas, Easter and Pentecost and so we were delighted that they chose to shine the spotlight on the beautiful church of All Saints in the Diocese of Peterborough, sharing our joy on this special day in the Church’s year.
The Day of Pentecost marks fifty days since Easter Day and is a major feast celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit that was given to disciples to guide, inspire and empower them following Jesus’ Ascension.
All Saints’ Church which sits in the centre of Northampton, was rebuilt after the Great Fire of Northampton in 1675 and is in the style of Wren’s churches in London with a square shape and intricate central dome. It has a strong choral tradition and a vibrant community congregation. It is the Civic Church for Northampton and plays an important role in civic life.
Bishop Debbie was delighted to be asked to preach at the service saying ‘Northampton is such an important town in our Diocese and I am pleased to be able to share God’s love with the community, as well as all who watch the broadcast, on the joyous feast of Pentecost’.
Rector of All Saints, Father Oliver Coss said ‘we’re very excited to welcome the BBC and Bishop Debbie to All Saints. We look forward to celebrating Pentecost together and do hope that worshippers from across the Diocese can join us too’.
The service is still available to be watched on BBC iPlayer here.
