Primary school creating a safe, happy, and successful place to learn

In September, Staverton Church of England Primary School in the Daventry Deanery, was presented with a Church School Excellence Award following successful outcomes of recent Ofsted and SIAMS inspections.

The SIAMS inspection recognised the strength of the school’s distinctive ethos, with the inspector noting that ‘the Christian vision and its associated values inspire a culture of love and acceptance throughout the school’, creating ‘a safe, happy and successful place to learn, where love ties everything together’. This is echoed in the school’s most recent Ofsted report where it states that pupils ‘enjoy learning in a calm and settled environment’ and that there are ‘positive relationships between staff and pupils.’

Collective worship is welcoming and unifies the school. It is described in the SIAMS report as an ‘integral part of the life of the school’ which ‘inspires, raises spirits and develops a curiosity about the world.’ The report also comments on the positive impact this has on the school community and how the ‘Christian vision has created a culture of compassion and respect.’

The school’s religious education was highly praised in the SIAMS report with the curriculum described as having been ‘carefully crafted to inspire and challenge,’ benefitting the pupils who ‘confidently use their knowledge to articulate their opinions and understanding of religions and worldviews.’

The school’s Ofsted report described how 'leaders have ensured that there is ambitious, well-planned curriculum in place for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and /or disabilities (SEND)’ and acknowledges that ‘teachers have good subject knowledge.’ The report also highlights how reading has been prioritised  and how that leads to pupils becoming ‘confident and fluent readers.’

The Church School Excellence Award was presented to headteacher Ruth Nelmes, by Peter Cantley, Director of Education for the Diocese and The Ven Richard Ormston, Archdeacon of Northampton, on 15 September, as part of a celebratory assembly.
