The Revd Dr John Smith has been awarded an MBE in the 2025 New Year’s Honours List for services to palliative care in the Cransley Hospice, the general hospitals and in the community.
Revd Dr John Smith founded Cransley Hospice in Kettering in 1998 whilst working as a Consultant in Palliative Medicine and becoming aware of the lack of inpatient hospice care in the north of the county.
Cransley Hospice provides inpatient care with its nine beds; outpatient care is given by specialist doctors who also work alongside specialist nurses, therapists and social workers.
Following his retirement he joined the board of Cransley Hospice Trust and was later appointed Patron. Since then over £12 million has been raised to support hospice care.
In 2007 John was ordained priest and he served with PTO at St. Peter and St Paul, Kettering until a rare and aggressive eye disease precipitated his retirement. He has dedicated his award to the Cransley Hospice team, to his wife, Ann, and his family.
