We are delighted to welcome Bishop John Stroyan to the Diocese of Peterborough as a new Honorary Assistant Bishop. He joins our three other Honorary Assistants who are all retired Bishops, licenced to continue their ministry in the Diocese, mainly helping with parish services and taking confirmations.
Bishop John retired as Bishop of Warwick in 2023, spending nearly 22 years of his ministry in the Diocese of Coventry. Having been ordained Deacon in 1983, by the then Bishop of Warwick, Keith Arnold, Bishop John served his curacy at St Peters, Hillfields, an inner-city parish. Following a further seven years in inner-city ministry in Birmingham Diocese and then 11 years in a multi-parish benefice in north Oxfordshire, and for a time as Area Dean, he was invited to become Bishop of Warwick in 2005.
During his episcopal ministry, Bishop John, has particularly appreciated the rich mix of parishes and communities in Coventry and Warwickshire. In addition to his ministry within the Diocese, he was privileged to be involved in representing the Church internationally, in both Syria and Israel-Palestine, and also in theological dialogue with the Orthodox Church in Eastern Europe.
He has been president of the Association for Promoting Retreats since 2017, is an experienced retreat leader, and has a keen interest in eastern spiritual tradition on which he draws considerably in his book ‘Turned by Divine Love’. He also has a particular interest in the relationship between faiths and the arts. He continues to be involved in rural affairs and the farming community and is now increasingly engaged in prison ministry.
Of his move to Peterborough Diocese he says; ‘I am delighted to be joining the Diocese of Peterborough with all its vibrancy, diversity and wealth of community and I much look forward to sharing with you in ministry and witness here, walking alongside you on our journey of faith, as pilgrims together.’
