Celebrating 30 years of the Priestly Ministry of Women

On Sunday 22 September we celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Priestly Ministry of Women in our diocese with a special service in Peterborough Cathedral.

The service was led by The Revd Canon Margaret Johnson, who was the second Bishop’s Adviser for Women’s Ministry in the Diocese, assisted by The Revd Paula York, current Dean of Women’s Ministry.  Music arranged and composed by female musicians was sung by the Cathedral Girls Choir.

The service gave thanks for all those who had served in all capacities and prayers were said for those who came before on the journey and were unable to realise their vocations.  A litany of Women of Faith was said with the microphone moving through the congregation so many different voices could be heard. During the offertory a number of symbols of ministry, including bread, wine, water, oil a chalice and paten, a Bible and a stole were brought forward and placed on a table in front of the altar.

Bishop Debbie thanked all those who had served and who continue to answer God’s call to ministry. She acknowledged the challenges that so many have had, and continue, to face, and underlined that all voices are important and precious.

The service ended with a special reception where all were able to share their joy and fellowship in coming together on such a special occasion.
