1.5 million stitches bring Cathedral’s medieval ceiling to life

On Thursday, 3 September, a reception was held to celebrate the completion of an extraordinary embroidery inspired by Peterborough Cathedral’s magnificent 13th-century painted Nave ceiling.

After eight years of dedication, volunteers have completed the large-scale needlepoint interpretation, using more than 1.5 million stitches to recreate the rich imagery of the medieval masterpiece.

The project’s story began in 1986, when Cathedral supporter Mrs Freeman commissioned it from the Royal School of Needlework. Sadly, she died in 2008 before work could begin. After passing through several helping hands, the materials were gifted to Peterborough Cathedral in 2018, coinciding with its 900th anniversary celebrations.

Seven volunteers initially took up the challenge, but the project soon grew into a remarkable community endeavour. More than 100 embroiderers contributed over the following eight years, including around 30 regular volunteers.

The embroidery was worked on fine canvas and based on William Strickland’s 1849 lithographic drawing of the original ceiling, with adjustments made to reflect the Cathedral ceiling more accurately. Despite early estimates suggesting the work could take up to 70 years, the volunteers completed it in just eight.

During the celebration reception, volunteers gathered with family and friends to admire the finished work and reflect on their contribution. Following a welcome from Cathedral Vice Dean, the Revd Canon Tim Alban Jones, Bishop Debbie placed the final four stitches, becoming the 104th person to contribute.

The completed embroidery is both a celebration of Peterborough Cathedral’s medieval heritage and a testament to the dedication, generosity and fellowship of its volunteers.
