Why Should I Do training?
The House of Bishops has made safeguarding training a core expectation of church life because creating safer environments is integral to the Church’s mission and ministry. Training equips church officers and leaders with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to recognise concerns, respond appropriately, and contribute to a culture where children, young people, and adults can participate safely and flourish. By engaging fully with safeguarding learning, we demonstrate our commitment to caring for all people and fulfilling our responsibilities as a safer Church.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Through training, we learn how to recognise and respond to concerns, understand our roles and responsibilities, and contribute to a culture where children, young people, and adults are respected, heard, and kept safe. Safeguarding training is not simply about following policy; it is about creating church communities where everyone is welcomed, valued, listened to, and protected.
What Training Should I Do?
The Diocese have developed a training matrix below that shows you the training that should be completed to be compliant within your role. This is based on the National Safeguarding Learning and Development Framework and Local Policy.

Key:
* The Diocese runs a specialist PtO Safeguarding Leadership course.
** Essential if involved in any recruitment. If recruiting a new incumbent, church members will only be selected for the panel will only be chosen if they have done all required church officer modules (for their role) and the Safer Recruitment module.
*** Churchwarden: If a benefice is in Vacancy, the churchwardens are required to have up to date safeguarding leadership training. The Diocese of Peterborough strongly recommends that all Churchwardens complete the leadership module as it is difficult to predict when periods of absence may arise.
