In the Diocese of Peterborough,there will be certain roles that require additional pathways to be completed. Please refer to our training matrix on the Safeguarding Training Page if you are unsure what levels are required of your roles.
Pathways on this page:
- PtO Leadership Session – those wishing to have their Permission to Officiate Licenese granted by the Bishop.
- PSO Induction – specifically designed for Parish Safeguarding Officers new or as a refresher to existing PSOs.
- Safer Recruitment – for anyone involved in recruitment within the diocese and for those who are appointed to the panel for recruitment of clergy.
Please see more details below that show you the course outcomes and how to complete the training on the Safeguarding Training Portal. For each pathway, you will find a ‘How-to’ guide that gives you a visual step by step for which buttons to click to access the course.
This course aims to explore and reflect on the safeguarding dimensions involved in the ministry of these roles, and is a requirement of those wishing to have their Permission to Officiate Licenese granted by the Bishop.
This course is delivered face to face (in various locations around the Diocese) by the Diocesan Safeguarding Training Officer and will last approx 3 hours, including a break.
By the end of the course participants should be able to:
- Connect the Church’s mission and theological foundations with what good leadership behaviour looks like in a safeguarding context.
- Evaluate aspects of their own practice and identify changes required which they then take forward with confidence.
- Analyse what healthy Christian communities look like, how healthy communities keep people safe, and their role as leaders in shaping Christian communities that are healthy and safe.
- Integrate their own faith, beliefs, and values with those underpinning good safeguarding behaviours.

You will be sent course materials two weeks before the session, which includes some reflection on current practice in your context. You will need to send this back to the Diocesan Safeguarding Training Officer before your course (email is best). After the training, you will be required to submit an evaluation within four weeks of the session.
If you cannot attend the dates listed on Eventbrite, then you are also able to choose from a Leadership session found on the Safeguarding Leadership Pathway page.
This online module aims to equip new and exisiting Parish Safeguarding Officers “To develop an understanding of the role of the Parish Safeguarding Officer and induct them into key working practices and relationships.”
This course is delivered online with members of the Diocesan Safeguarding Team and will last approx 3.5 hours, including breaks.
By the end of the course participants should be able to:
- Understand the role, responsibilities and working relationships of the PSO, including the Local Authority.
- Identify a variety of approaches to raising awareness and improving safeguarding practice.
- Evaluate safeguarding information reported by members of the church or community and determining an appropriate response.
- Create a development plan for local ministry to support development of safeguarding practice in their context.

You will be sent course materials two weeks before the session, which includes some reflection on current practice in your context – please bring thsi to the session with you.
This course equips participants with an understanding of safer recruitment, including why it is important and when it should be used, and the skills and practices necessary to promote positive safeguarding behaviour (and detect safeguarding risk) once a person is in role.
If you are doing safer recruitment because you would like to be part of an interview panel for clergy, please be aware that you will have needed to have completed all other elements of Safeguarding Training required for your role as well as Safer Recruitment to be selected.
The recommended time to complete this course is 1 – 1.5 hours.
By the end of the course participants should be able to:
- Reflect theologically on personnel recruitment and safer people management.
- Understand the recruitment and people management process, its intersection with relevant legislation, and how each stage contributes to safer people management.
- Explore good people management practice to be implemented once a person is in post / role.
- Create a contextually relevant personal management plan that reduces risks.
