Throughout their centenary year the Peterborough Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers (PDG) have a packed calendar of events and Saturday 13 July saw the Guild set up home next to the visitor centre at Stanwick Lakes for a celebratory day out. The aim was to enjoy both ringing, and the company of ringers, in the pleasant setting of the nature reserve and also to raise awareness of ringing with the general public.
There were handbells and bell plates for people to try, bell related colouring and crafts and model bells on display. Many of the visitors, both ringers and non-ringers, had a go on the Maplestead Mini Ring with varying degrees of success and the Guild’s training bell, the Wombell, was available to try backstrokes. The Wombell is set with quite a low sally and tail end, making it ideal for curious children to have a try.
Contests ran throughout the afternoon including guess the number of bells in the bottle and guess the length of the bell rope, with prizes for the winners. The weather was generally kind, and many supporters of the event were able to enjoy the nature reserve and adventure playground.
2024 marks 100 years since the creation of the Peterborough Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers and there are many more events scheduled to take place throughout the year.
