The Wildlife Trust has launched its Churchyard Conservation Award Scheme for 2023 and is inviting you to get involved.
The Scheme, which is designed to help encourage a greater range of wildlife in our Churchyards, helps encourage good environmental management by giving practical advice, including visits from advisors in churchyard management, and providing awards that can be worked towards.
However big or small, every Churchyard can be a haven for wildlife, providing areas for birds to nest and feed and for wildflowers to grow. Grassland habitats found around our churches are particularly important havens for butterflies and insects. If you already have areas that you have allowed to re-wild, have bird boxes and wildflower areas or a compost heap you may already be doing enough to gain your Bronze Award.
Bishop John, Patron of the Award Scheme said; ‘I love the way Churchyards can be places of abundant life, overflowing with plants, flowers and God's wonderful creatures’. These awards can provide a way of looking at your churchyard differently, and could also help you apply for your EcoChurch Status, a vital step in our journey to carbon net zero.
