The county of Rutland was celebrated at a service in Peterborough Cathedral on 2 March, attended by High Sheriff of Rutland, Richard Cole and Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Sarah Furness alongside distinguished guests including members of the local military, schools, councils and judiciary.
The smallest historic county in England, Rutland has a strong identity and strong sense of community. Despite its small size, Rutland has over 300 voluntary organisations offering health and wellbeing support, which along with other community groups and youth organisations were represented and thanked for their vital work supporting the life and commerce of Rutland.
Rutland has been part of the Diocese for more than 500 years, with its beautiful rural character and way of life reflected in its parishes. The Bishop of Peterborough, Debbie Sellin, gave the homily celebrating the many unique features of the county.
The Lord-Lieutenant said; ‘Today's service to celebrate Rutland is a great opportunity to appreciate this wonderful county’s rich heritage, sense of identity and strong sense of community, supported by so many organisations and individuals’.
