Two secondary schools in the Diocese have recently been presented with Church School Excellence Awards. These accolades have been awarded in recognition of the impact of the Church school’s Christian vision on the students and adults. This involves looking at the school’s Christian vision, the provision the school makes because of this vision and how effective this provision is in enabling all pupils to flourish.
On 7 September Bishop Debbie presented The Kings (The Cathedral) School with their award following an inspection earlier this year. In their SIAMS report inspectors praised the school as “a family achieving excellence”, recognising a deeply embedded Christian vision that lies at the heart of its mission. The values of joyfulness, generosity, inclusivity, spirituality and excellence were highlighted as shaping every aspect of school life.
The report commended the school’s thoughtfully designed curriculum and its commitment to spiritual development, noting how pupils are encouraged to make bold choices about their futures. Enrichment opportunities, including charitable initiatives often led by students, were recognised for helping young people develop confidence, compassion and character while making a positive impact on the wider community.
Collective worship was described as “the heartbeat of life at King’s”, providing opportunities for meaningful reflection and supporting the spiritual growth of both students and staff. Inspectors also praised Religious Education as a safe and welcoming space where students feel respected, valued and able to explore faith, philosophy and ethics.
The inspection affirmed the school’s commitment to its Christian foundation and its success in helping students “discover their God-given uniqueness”, creating a community where all can flourish together.
On 11 September Archdeacon Alison presented Bishop Stopford School with their award in a celebratory assembly. In their SIAMS report inspectors praised the school’s deeply embedded Christian vision, describing it as the cornerstone of school life and highlighting the way it shapes relationships, learning and personal development across the community.
Inspectors commended the school’s curriculum, which is rooted in its Christian values and provides rich opportunities for spiritual growth. Students were recognised for leading positive change within the school and for embracing opportunities to serve others through initiatives such as the annual Faith Week.
Collective worship was highlighted as a significant strength, making a positive contribution to the spiritual flourishing of both students and staff. Inspectors praised the growing involvement of students in planning and leading worship, supported by the school’s chaplain and local clergy.
Religious Education also received high praise. The report noted that RE is valued and prioritised by leaders, with expert teaching inspiring enthusiasm, maturity, and thoughtful engagement with questions of faith and belief.
The inspection outcome reflects the dedication of leaders, staff, governors, and the wider school community in living out the school’s Christian foundation. Together they have created a school where faith, learning and service are woven into everyday life, enabling all to flourish.
