St Mary the Virgin Church, Finedon has become the resting place of an important piece of military heritage after the Royal Anglian Regimental Standard was formally laid up during a special service.

Around 120 guests gathered at the church for the dignified and moving occasion, including serving and former members of the Regiment, civic representatives, military dignitaries, local residents and invited guests. Together they reflected on the history, achievements and sacrifices of those who have served under the Standard.

The laying up of a Standard is a significant military tradition symbolising honour, service, and the close bond between the armed forces and the communities they serve.

Throughout the service, prayers, readings and reflections gave thanks to God for those who have served and celebrated the enduring values of duty, service loyalty and remembrance.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered for refreshments before enjoying a buffet lunch in the village. Veterans, families and friends spent time sharing memories, renewing friendships and marking a milestone that will be remembered for years to come.

The event was a fitting tribute to the Royal Anglian Regiment’s proud heritage and ensured that the Standard now rests in a place of honour within St Mary the Virgin Church. There it will remain in the care of the church as a visible reminder of service and sacrifice, offering future generations a place for prayer, remembrance and reflection.
